History of Niceville, Florida

Here at Pete Moore Mitsubishi, we believe that our hometown is one of the greatest and kindest places in the world. History shows us that we certainly aren’t the first to think that way. Since its humble beginnings, Niceville has warmly welcomed visitors and new residents, and it has always been a proud supporter of the men and women in our military.

Whether you’ve lived here your whole life or are just stopping by, it doesn’t take long to realize that this little Florida city is a special place. Niceville, Florida is surrounded by the gorgeous outdoors on every side. With the shores of Choctawhatchee Bay to the south and Boggy Bayou along its west end, Niceville has plenty of natural wonders to enjoy.
Our city was originally named Boggy, Florida, until one day the postman’s daughter was asked to come up with a new name. She deemed that this beautiful area be called Niceville. Maybe it was due to the average 343 sunny days a year or the kind folks that inhabited the area.

Some have suggested that it was named after Nice, France, which is also situated on a lovely bay. Either way, Niceville, Florida has been truly deserving of its new name since it was first settled in the 1840s by an Englishman named William Nathey.
In 1935, Eglin Air Force Base was established across Boggy Bayou. This was the first step toward making Niceville a proud military town, a place for military families to establish themselves and build lives. The oldest school in Niceville, now Lula J. Edge Elementary School, began construction in 1924. Completed in 1943, when Eglin Air Force Base was nearly a decade old, this school became the first in the country to work with members from military families with a nine-month school term. This movement set the standard for the the way that Niceville, Florida would accommodate military families henceforth. As proud supporters of the military, this is just one of the many reasons that we at Pete Moore Mitsubishi are so pleased to call Niceville, Florida our home.
